Hornstulls Hemgård

Examemensarbete, 2022. Ombyggnadsprojekt av Hornstulls tunnelbaneuppgång, Hornsbruksgatan. Handledare: Malin Heyman och Anders Berensson

The north entrance building for Hornstulls subway station at Hornsbruksgatan, Södermalm is up for demolition.

This project aims to explore one way of how this building can be preserved and reused instead of demolished. And a proposal for how one can add a public space to an already existing building.

The building was designed by the styleforming architects Bengt Lindroos and Hans Borgström together with their college Nils Arne Rosén at Stockholms spårvägar in 1961-1964.

Bengt Lindroos and Hans Borgström is also known for their design of Kaknästornet (1962-67) and Söderledskyrkan, (1955-1960) both designed around the same time as Hornstulls Tunnelbana.

In the interventions and additions of the building a lot of inspiration has come from Söderledskyrkan.. The buildings are in some ways similar. Both appear quite monolithic and the placement and appearance of the windowsills are almost identical.

But the care of details and materials that can be seen in Söderledskyrkan is lacking in Hornstulls subway. The raw concrete is softened with complementary materials - pine wood and red brick, and the grand dimensions are balanced by artisanal details.
